The New Moon is filled with possibilities and is an opportune time to plant seeds for what we want to create. It’s a time for new beginnings and renewal of projects, commitments, and relationships. These simple practices can help you harness the energy of the New Moon to create new possibilities and to manifest your goals.
The world has been going through major shifts, and we may also be experiencing similar changes in our own lives. I know that this has been the case for me. But one thing that I have been considering as I bear witness to the change and dismantling of what once felt constant and reliable is what will be created in the future. What will I create and what will we, as a human community, create to replace the old?
The New Moon on October 21, 2025 (8:25 am EST), is the perfect time to contemplate such questions. When the Sun, Moon and Earth are in alignment, as happens with the New Moon, the side of the Moon that faces Earth is dark.[1] The darkness of the New Moon eventually begins to give way to light as the Moon waxes and moves towards the visible Full Moon. In this darkness of the New Moon, we have the chance to plant seeds of what we want to create, as if in dark, fertile soil, so that they can grow, realize and manifest as they are energized by the light. “The energy of the New Moon is strong and often erratic, but it becomes a steady pull of increasing strength as the days move toward the Full [Moon] . . . This is the time to take risks, go for change, make things, write things, start things.”[2] In the energy of the New Moon, we embrace the possibilities and allow ourselves to envision what we want to create. It is also a time for us to renew commitments such as projects that have ended up on the backburner so that we can bring life, or creative energy, back to these commitments. The energies of the New Moon are at their peak at the New Moon but are also felt a couple of days before and after. So, we can work with these energies even if we miss the actual moment of the New Moon.
As the New Moon approaches, perhaps these practices will help you harness its power:
- In addition to cleaning or decluttering, you can use the clearing energy of sage (dried, incense, or essential oil added to a diffuser) to clear your home and release old, stagnant energy.
- Plant new seeds by writing down what you want to manifest over the coming Moon cycle. You can place your written intention on an altar where you revisit it daily to help make it more concrete. You could add a new plant to represent the new energy that you’re manifesting or white flowers to symbolize a new beginning to your altar. Adding crystals that represent the energy of growth, such as amber, can help energize your intention even more.
- Write your desires or goals on pieces of paper and burn them, releasing the ashes to the wind with the intention that the Universe will help you manifest them.
- Be introspective and give yourself space to assess your relationships, projects, and commitments. Think about whether they can be strengthened with renewed energy and what actions you can take to do so.
- Initiate growth through action. Consider what actions you could take to help your new ideas, creative endeavors, and goals flourish. Taking even a small step draws energy towards desires becoming reality and can also bring a sense of renewal. Moving physically can help us generate the energy we need as well. So, if you’ve been physically stagnant, take this time to begin to move the energy in your body to help get things moving. Dance, rebound, walk, whatever floats your boat so long as it brings you joy. You can then use that joyful energy to help grow the seeds you’ve planted.
